You shall have no other gods before me.
When I think of the word “idol”, I immediately think of a golden sculpture in a land far, far away surrounded by a campfire and people chanting their ancestor’s spirituals.
I can’t be the only one.
When God created feelings, He definitely had me in mind. It’s no big secret.
This can be a good thing and a bad thing.
A hearty laugh, queasy butterflies, overwhelming joy. These are some of the most beautiful things we ever get toexperience.
But on the other side of that dwells the total opposite. Paralyzing fear, palm-sweaty anxiety, and boiling point anger.
Yikes. No Bueno.
Becoming a slave to these kinds of emotions will leave you begging for your emancipation.
And. It. Feels. So. Good. At. The. Time.
Because you have every right. Because it’s unfair. Because you want to guard your heart. Because they’re just not understanding you. The first impulsive rush you feel when things don’t go your way, sits high on the throne accepting your anxiety as worship.
If the enemy can conquer the battleground of your mind – he can control your life. If he can convince you to throw yourself a pity party because of the tree you cannot eat from- you will live a life of regret. If he can make you angry enough to believe your spouse is your enemy – you will live a life you regret. If he make you feel anxious enough to move ahead of God – you will live a life you regret.
You become bought, bossed, and dragged by the very thing that will betray you later on.
When you decide to let things like fear, anger, anxiety override your faith – you have put duct tape over the mouth of God and declared He has no say.
Much like any other idol – emotions die. Emotions fade. Emotions aren’t stable. Emotions are here today and gone tomorrow. No matter how “real” it feels in the moment – if you let them govern your life, you’ll end up with a heart of regret later.
Do we really want to be ruled by such a god?
Evaluate your boiling points and accept this challenge to do better.
Bring your emotions into subjection and watch God work.
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God,who loved me and gave himself for me.
